Urns are available in different sizes to accommodate individual needs. There’s no reason you can’t use a larger urn than you need, but purchasing an urn that doesn’t have the necessary capacity can be problematic. As a general rule, one pound of healthy body weight* requires one cubic inch of urn capacity. For example, a loved one with a healthy body weight of 180 pounds prior to passing would require an urn with 180 cubic inch capacity or greater. It’s best to purchase an urn with a larger capacity than you require.
In addition to providing a vessel for loved ones who require less capacity. smaller urns can be used for sharing purposes, allowing you to divide the cremains between family or friends.
A keepsake urn holds a very small amount of cremains, usually about 2 to 3 cubic inches. They can be used to share a token amount with loved ones who desire a remembrance or transport a portion to a scattering site.
*healthy body weight is considered weight prior to illness and excluding excess body fat and is a safer way to estimate urn capacity in the event of illness. Fat and muscle do not affect the mass of cremated ashes. Height and gender (which predict skeletal weight) can be used to accurately predict the weight of the remains.
